"Yoga is not a work-out, it is a work-in. And this is the point of spiritual practice; to make us teachable; to open up our hearts and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are." - Rolf Gates

With vintage wooden floors, high ceilings and intentional interior décor, The Shala is equal parts beautiful and interesting: exactly what I was looking for in a studio when I started my yoga journey about 2 years ago.

I came for the enchanting studio but the teachers make it feel like home. I have my favourites but really they’re all amazing! I love the early morning weekday classes from 6:30 – 7:30, taught by Thomas Sheehy (Mondays and Wednesdays), Kathleen Booyse (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Nena Butler (Fridays). Another favourite of mine is the Sunday morning class at 10, taught by Naomi Marshak. If I’ve left anyone off it’s only because I can’t make their classes because of work.

Everyone has their own style of teaching and sequencing but what they all share is a deep commitment to the practice and their students. Don’t be surprised when they know you by name after only one or two classes!

They offer short courses and events (usually in support of the Earthchild or Girlchild Projects). I found their Absolute Beginners Course really rewarding because it teaches the fundamental basics with a focus on alignment.

But first, coffee

It’s also in a really picturesque part of town: Dunkley Square, Gardens. There are two places to get coffee after class: Roxy’s and Spirit Café (my fave).

Magic Markers:

  • Ask at Reception for a coffee loyalty card. Get 1 cup free for every 9 you buy from Spirit!

  • They offer Suspension Yoga classes every week. Build strength and agility with a "hammock" suspended from the ceiling.

  • They have a selection of books you can purchase or just hang out and read on the couch before class.

  • It's not hard to imagine a ghost story or two behind the old heritage building.

Namaste!
